Public servants get salary hike

Certain categories of public servants and some members of the judiciary are smiling all the way to the bank. This after President Cyril Ramaphosa published in a government gazette the determination of salaries and allowances for traditional leaders, judges and magistrates. In his notice published on March 25, those eligible for increases would be backdated to April last year. The increases of only 3% will be for office bearers who earn above R1.5million, and 4% for those earning below that. The salaries of kings and queens are now set at R1.2m, principal traditional leaders R1.1m, senior traditional leaders R270729 and headmen and head women R116418. The chairperson of the National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL) will pocket R933270, his deputy R713811; chairperson of the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders (PHTL) R768678; NHTL members R415113 and PHTL members R355842. Two elderly Durban women from a retirement village have tested positive for Covid-19 and are fighting for their lives. One victim, aged 81, and a resident at the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged, is being treated at St Augustine’s Hospital. The other, aged 78, is in isolation at the Bill Buchanan village in Morningside. Their diagnosis created fear and panic among those linked to the establishment. After the women tested positive, Health Department officials visited the home on Friday to screen residents and check isolation arrangements. Their tests included three staff members. Scared families and friends have been inundating the home with telephone inquiries since Thursday, worried about the wellbeing of their loved ones. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed on Sunday evening that South Africa’s confirmed coronavirus cases had increased to 1280. This is an increase of 93 from the previously reported cases. 67 members of a church congregation have tested positive for Covid-19 – They had attended a gathering in Bloemfontein where 5 overseas tourists were infected – The Department of Health is tracking down the people who came into contact with the 67 A church congregation of 859 people has reported that 67 of its members have tested positive for the coronavirus. The church in Bloemfontein was visited by 5 people overseas who were infected with the virus.
