Coronavirus: Clip of police goes viral, Mbalula confirms wrongdoing

One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane has brought the inconsistencies seen in the enforcement of the lockdown regulations into the spotlight

- Maimane managed to catch Minister Fikile Mbalula's attention with his questions on the situation

- Mbalula confirmed that the officers seen chasing a citizen standing in their own yard home were acting outside of the current regulations

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has responded to Mmusi Maimane's probing questions over the imposed lockdown.

Sharing a clip of police officials chasing a citizen into their home from the safety of their own yards, Maimane asked:

    "Mr Fikile Mbalula surely people are allowed to be in their own yards? Especially if they are by themselves."



Mbalula responded that citizens were indeed within their rights to catch some fresh air outside, in their yards, for the duration of the lockdown.

Responding to Maimane's question, Mbalula promised to communicate with forces on the ground:

"Aita Mmusi, yes, people are allowed to be within their yards. The enforcement must always be in-line with the Regulations and I will communicate with my colleagues so this information gets to the forces on the ground."

Briefly.co.za reported that the current vague regulations had caused chaos within the transport sector this week, with many unsure of the rules.

With curfews put in place governing public transport schedules in conjunction with a 60% limit on passenger capacity, many were left unable to access essential services.

Essential workers whose shifts ended outside of the allotted timeframes were also left unable to commute.
