9 Secrets of happy, healthy, and emotionally committed relationships

Image
“A secure romantic relationship is as smooth as a calm body of water” If lasting love had specific ingredients, what would need to be mixed together? What would make it delicious year after year? Here are nine special ingredients, or secrets of happy, healthy, and emotionally committed relationships: 1. 100% emotionally invested Caryl Rusbult is a social psychologist who studied commitment in marriages over a 30-year period. This is not a “one foot in, one foot out” type of investment. This is an all-in investment, and it is required by both partners. 2. Responsiveness Dr. Gottman’s research highlights that successful couples turn towards each other’s bids for connection 86% of the time. Couples who separate only do so 33% of the time. In order to last, tune into what your partner is saying or doing. Additional research highlighted that it wasn’t how often a couple fought, but how little affection and emotional responsiveness they offered one another that caused a relationship to de

8 Tips for keeping the lust alive in your relationship

Image
Experiencing sexual fade-out doesn’t mean that your marriage is doomed There once was a time that you and your partner chased each other around the house – passionate, loved-up and full of energy! Somewhere along the line though, things changed, and those super-sexy date nights and the fun that followed, became few and far between… … which is completely normal – according to research. Researchers say that, within two to four years, the chemical connection (and that loving, zesty feeling) between couples begins to wear off – and so does the extra-hot, extra-often sex. Experiencing sexual fade-out doesn’t mean that your marriage is doomed, though. In fact, it’s 100% possible to re-energise your relationship – and add new sparks! World-famous relationship guru, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author, Esther Perel, tells us how: 1. Stay playful The goal isn’t just about getting our partner to want to sleep with you – it’s to remind you both what it’s like to have fun with

4 Destructive behaviours that could tear you and your spouse apart

Image
Destructive behaviours can tear a marriage apart – but it doesn’t have to be that way for yours Jokingly criticising your partner, being sarcastic or even something as ‘innocent’ as eyeball-rolling may not be as harmless as you thought. Jo’burg-based couples counsellor and relationship therapist Michael Kallenbach explains how to stop these behaviours from driving you and your spouse apart.   1. Lack of communication In all his years of practice, Michael has found that many couples don’t know how to communicate effectively, which can seriously undermine their relationship. “It’s important to tell your spouse what you’re thinking and how you’re feeling. It’s equally crucial to do it at an appropriate time,” says Michael. Instead of bringing an issue up during the morning rush, rather wait till the end of the day, when the children are asleep or doing their homework and you’ve both settled down. Then have an honest chat, without assigning blame: instead, explain how whatever happened

Here’s why eating raw meat is risky There’s a chance that bacteria like salmonella or E. coli are lurking in your package of sirloin or chicken. Although food production companies have processes to keep their facilities clean, bacteria can be transferred into your future dinner at any point in the production process. “You don’t know how the meat was handled,” says Nelken. “There are a lot of questions.” Many people incorrectly believe that chicken is the only meat that’s unsafe raw, says Nelken. At first it was difficult to accept, but she managed to achieve more as a person living with HIV than she otherwise would have. Peaceful said she’d helped thousands of people across Mzansi and neighbouring countries. Peaceful said she had hosted an annual dialogue to get people to talk about their problems and get help to overcome them. I took control of my life when I started living out the purpose God had intended me to live for,” she said. She also started the Peaceful Kgomo Foundation to help people struggling to come to terms with their status or that of a loved one. “There are far more deadlier things than HIV, and living with it doesn’t mean your life has come to an end. SABC confirms that it has cancelled Isidingo

Image
The SABC has given local soap Isidingo the boot, after 21 years on-air. Rumours started swirling after Sunday World first reported that the show had been axed. In July Isidingo celebrated its 21st birthday with special episodes marking the soapies milestone anniversary. On Friday the SABC confirmed reports saying the final episode will air on Thursday 12 March 2020. “The decision to decommission Isidingo was informed by a number of factors which includes poor audience ratings during the time slot, decline in revenue and poor return on investment. “The organisation was faced with no option but to review the performance of all programmes on the channel that are not performing and to ensure that the channel’s content is competitive and commercially viable.” said Mr David Makubyane, SABC Acting Group Executive: Television. Originally produced by Endemol Shine Africa, Isidingo was once labelled “cutting-edge” for its groundbreaking storylines – including HIV-positive and gay characters

Moonchild Sanelly lucky to be alive after she was hospitalised

Image
Moonchild Sanelly thinks she cheated death after she was hospitalised with debilitating symptoms of malaria. She contracted the life-threatening disease in Malawi where she had gone to perform at Lake of Stars international festival last month. Despite her near-death experience during her four-day hospitalisation, Moonchild still sees the funny side out of the whole ordeal. I did see Jesus and his eyes are squint,” she joked, albeit with a nervous giggle. Before she was hospitalised, the 32-year-old born Sanelisiwe Twisha had travelled to Los Angeles and Austria unaware she had contracted malaria. “It was scary. I remember telling myself there is no way this is going to come out and [have people] say, ‘rest in peace Moonchild’,” she recalled. “I was in and out of consciousness. I was so weak and we initially thought it was just jet lag. So, I was travelling and didn’t know that I had malaria in my system. Apparently when they called the ambulance I was so delirious that I pushed my f

Sister shot & killed, then brother thrown out of moving taxi

Police are investigating the murder of a Mpumalanga woman who was shot and killed, and the attempted murder of her brother who was thrown out of a moving taxi near Witbank. On Friday, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi told News24 the siblings had taken a taxi from Johannesburg and made it to Witbank. According to reports, they had both spent the day at job interviews in Gauteng. “[While in Witbank] They then boarded a taxi with the view of going back home to Carolina [Mpumalanga]. There were a few men in the taxi with them. Instead of going to Carolina, the taxi rerouted. According to the brother, some of the men then produced firearms. The brother was then thrown out of the moving taxi,” Hlathi said. SowetanLive reported Kwanele Fezile and Ngceboyenkosi Minende Zuma, both 22, took the taxi home late on Monday after they went for job interviews in Johannesburg. The news website added the siblings’ brother, Sanele Zuma, said Kwanele was raped before being shot in the head. However, the police

Nadia Nakai spills the beans about what’s in her Garage

Image
She may drop bars about pulling up in a four-door Audi, but rapper Nadia Nakai is no longer cruising around in that ride. Instead, sis has “upgraded” to a Mercedes-Benz C220 convertible and a V-Class minivan. “Back then, I had an Audi and an H1. It is a long way from her days driving a red Fiat Palio. “My door didn’t lock from the inside. I couldn’t open my window. My clutch was a situation. That car literally got me through varsity.” Nadia took Sabby for a ride in her van and opened up about her car journey. The couple face charges of fraud, money laundering and the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act for offences they allegedly committed from 2015. Prince Kaybee has no time for Cassper Nyovest comparison

Image
It looks as if Prince Kaybee wants to leave the beef he has had with rapper Cassper Nyovest in the past and is not even here for comparisons between the two. The muso, who lit up Twitter earlier this year with his shade aimed at Cassper, is having a hell of a year. After dominating the charts and streaming services, the muso took to social media to flex a little about his accomplishments. An impressed, or spicy, fan then suggested he was better than his rival. “Well deserved. Who’s the real Mufasa vele?” the follower asked, using Cassper’s nickname. Prince Kaybee was not about that life, and made it clear he is on his own level and comparisons were not welcome on his TL. “Don’t compare please, its almost 2020 so change your mindset.” Kaybee’s response came just days after he told another fan he would not attend Cassper’s Fill Up Royal Bafokeng Stadium gig because his guns were “too big”. The pair lit up social media in June when a competition over who had the biggest bi

Dr. Malinga’s new song Ngiyolala Ngifile, meaning “over my dead body”, was shot at the Kanana Cemetery in Hammanskraal, Tshwane. Graves and tombstones are seen in the background while they dance and sing. Dr. Malinga said the video just complements his song and nothing more. “He must cancel this video. That’s so disrespectful to our African culture.” “People criticize everything. Some people who’re buried there are lonely and neglected so my visit there was important,” he said. He said when funeral parlours and businesses go there and shoot adverts, no one says anything. “During some funerals music is played. People mustn’t fear death because of my video,” he said. On Twitter, King George wrote: “No no, no! Malin

DJ Black Coffee gets the apology he was waiting for

Image
DJ Black Coffee was left fuming this week after his name was used on promotional material for a “Block Party” concert he is not a part of. The DJ was originally used to promote a block party featuring US hip-hop star Rick Ross. The Block Party event will see the American star headline shows in Durban and East London. It was headlined in 2015, 2016 and 2017 by Black Coffee. Taking to Twitter, Black Coffee noted that this year’s event was still branded Black Coffee Block Party and distanced himself from the concert. Not sure why this show is still ‘Black Coffee Block Party’. I am not part of this show. This is false advertising,” he wrote. Marketing company Fifth Ace later issued a statement apologising for the “mishap”. It claimed that it had made changes to the name of the event which did not reflect in the marketing Coffee referred to. “We take full responsibility from a marketing perspective for the mishap with the naming of the event Block Party, as changes were made and did

The Queen’s Mmabatho is desperately looking for love

Image
I am so disgustingly single its crazy. I am tired of being single. I just want to say to all the guys who have wanted to ask me out (but were scared) thinking I have a man, come through because I am very single. Dear future bae, I am ready. At times, her mind tells her that she knew her character very well from all stand points, but Motsoaledi Setumo was taken by surprise by how Mmabatho’s dramatic storyline is unfolding in Mzansi Magic’s hit telenovela The Queen. Mmabatho happened to find out only recently, that her beloved mother, whom she believed died in a taxi crash, was in fact murdered by her now late husband Shaka Khoza (played by SK Khoza) by means of a bomb he planted in her car. Angry at him posthumously, for killing her mother and furious that he’s no longer available to answer for his sins, she refuses to mourn Shaka. Neither is she willing to claim a share in his estate, she is totally detached from him, and wants nothing to do with the funeral arrangements, insisting s

Singer Simphiwe Dana opens up after going through surgery and completely losing her voice

Image
Singer Simphiwe Dana opens up about her vocal cord surgery, battling anxiety and depression and using music to heal her pain. My voice was completely gone. But my doctor said the voice is there, I was just scared to use it. When she performed at Mama’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s memorial at Bassline in 2018, singer Simphiwe Dana struggled with her voice: however, for many, she wasn’t singing out of tune, but her voice wasn’t going where she wanted it to. She managed to thrill the gathering, but she was worried: for Simphiwe, when her disobedient voice couldn’t yield to her command, she knew something was terribly wrong and wasted no time getting professional medical advice. As fate may have it, Simphiwe (39) was left shell shocked when doctors diagnosed her with vocal dysphonia, a disorder in which the muscles that generate a person’s voice go into periods of spasm. I thought I was going to lose my voice forever,” she told DRUM magazine. The doctors, told her that vocal dysphonia, is

Boity Thulo is the first SA female rapper to have a platinum-selling single

Image
Chasing your dreams is very important. Ask Boity, who made history by becoming the first SA female rapper to reach platinum status for her single, Wuz Dat. Boity Thulo was honoured along with other chart-toppers in the music scene at Universal Music Group’s Night For The Stars award ceremony on Wednesday night. Despite receiving a lukewarm response on the debut single late last year, Boity sure was right that it was only “the beginning”. The platinum-selling news comes as a victory for the former TV presenter now turned rapper, who has in the past been criticised by haters for her bars and accused of using a ghostwriter. In a short sit-down interview with TshisaLIVE, a shaken yet grateful Boity mentioned that the 3.4 million streams the single got came as a shock to her. I don’t know … I didn’t pray for this. So, I’m not prepared … you know. Boity added that she had no idea her rap career would be so successful so quickly. “There wasn’t a specific moment when I told myself I wante

Court dismisses Jacob Zuma’s leave to appeal

Image
The Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday dismissed with costs former president Jacob Zuma’s leave to appeal. Zuma and French arms company Thales were appealing the decision to dismiss their application for a permanent stay of prosecution. Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane argued last Friday that in rejecting Zuma’s bid for a permanent stay of prosecution, three KwaZulu-Natal judges had ignored “the prejudicial conduct of the National Prosecuting Authority” towards him. Judgment was reserved for a decision. This is a developing story.

Serious Signs that show you may have HIV

Image
Within a month or two of HIV entering the body, 40% to 90% of people experience flu-like symptoms known as acute retroviral syndrome (ARS). But sometimes HIV symptoms don’t appear for years—sometimes even a decade—after infection. “In the early stages of HIV infection, the most common symptoms are none,” says Michael Horberg, MD, director of HIV/AIDS for Kaiser Permanente, in Oakland, Calif. One in five people in the United States with HIV doesn’t know they have it, which is why it’s so important to get tested, especially if you have unprotected sex with more than one partner or use intravenous drugs. Here are some signs that you may be HIV-positive. Fever One of the first signs of ARS can be a mild fever, up to about 102 degrees F. The fever, if it occurs at all, is often accompanied by other usually mild symptoms, such as fatigue, swollen lymph glands, and a sore throat. “At this point, the virus is moving into the bloodstream and starting to replicate in large numbers,” says Carlo
