A military band played the national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” before Macron inspected the troops. Chirac’s casket, covered with a Tricolor flag, was then carried to the centre of the courtyard. Macron, who did not speak, will also attend a memorial service at the Church of Saint-Sulpice in downtown Paris alongside dozens of French politicians and foreign officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Jordan’s King Abdallah II. Image
A Twitter user wanted to see who people think is the better host - Idols SA's Proverb or Mzansi's Queen B, Bonang Matheba - Proverb put an end to the debate by being a humble sweetheart - He said there's no competition, Bonang is better than him Proverb showed what a sweet and humble person he can be by giving Bonang Matheba praise as a better host than himself. A social media user tried to create competition between the two hosts, but Proverb nicely shut that idea down. According to Proverb, there isn't any comparison, it's 'Queen B all day every day'. Briefly.co.za noticed that Bonang also laughed off the comparison and it's clear the two celebs won't let public opinion pair them off against each other. Report reveals three women die daily at the hands of their partners in SA

The male psyche built up from a young age is that the more women you conquer, the higher rating you receive among peers, says activist. Abuse and aggression – an issue of power relations – was embedded in society across racial groups, an academic said yesterday. Development economist Nthabiseng Moleko, who has been central in the fight against women abuse, said the male identity, built on dominion and power over a woman was “problematic, but highly prevalent”. “When rejection or choices made by the woman taint the male ego, the man can neither cope nor respond to this, leading to a forceful and violent response. “Violence in our society is also abnormal, even among children. “Criminal acts, the level of violence and disregard for human life, is pointing towards a broken nation. Our people need healing and restoration,” said Moleko. “We have lost our humanity towards each other and must begin to rethink how to appreciate human life.” Moleko, who is based at the University of Stellenbo

Politicians react to Mmusi Maimane's 'Steinhoff-sponsored car' scandal: 'Hope you enjoyed church today'

Image
DA leader Mmusi Maimane has raised eyebrows after allegations that he drove a Steinhoff-sponsored SUV, despite being warned not to. The claims were published in Rapport. The paper claimed that the car was given to Maimane during the 2016 elections by Markus Jooste, former CEO of Steinhoff. Investments worth billions were lost when the company faced allegations of insider trading and accounting fraud, causing its share price to drop. Jooste resigned after “irregularities” at the company were flagged. Rapport claims that after the Steinhoff revelations were made, the car was returned. Maimane has refuted the allegations, taking to Twitter to call the report a smear campaign. Go tla loka bafanas @MmusiMaimane , hope you enjoyed church today. — Julius Sello Malema (@Julius_S_Malema) September 29, 2019 If you think Steinhoff only funded the DA with a car, think again! What is important about the story is not so much that Markus Jooste gifted Maimane with a White Fortune

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, where she represented President Cyril Ramaphosa, Pandor said the incidents of violence and looting that erupted in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal “were regrettable and shameful for a nation with such a proud history of struggle and international solidarity support”. The SA government strongly condemned the xenophobic attacks and was working hard to address the security lapses and intolerance that led to it, she said. “We are working tirelessly to tackle crime and lawlessness and to ensure that the arrested criminals face the full might of the law. We are also committed to addressing the inadequacy of our immigration administration to curb illega

Dingaan Mokebe wants men to act a little bit better

Image
This is why we are called dogs, we are cowards. Can men stop this now? Enough! What have these poor women done wrong to deserve such?” he said in a video on Instagram. In the video, Digaan calls on men to do better and says that violence is not the answer. Why are we so violent, why do we see death and killing as the solution? What mistake did these women do, what wrong did these women do? Dingaan then adds that if men are killing women, why should women trust them. “This is the reason why ladies don’t trust us, this is why we are called trash because of our behaviour. South African men we are cowards, myself included, I am a South African man, I’m no different, I live in SA. The men doing this are our brothers, they are our cousins, they live in our communities. We know them.” He explained that there was absolutely no reason why a woman should wake up and go to a post office and come back home dead. There was also no reason for a woman to leave her house and go to her boyfri

DA leader Mmusi Maimane drove around in a car that was a gift from Markus Jooste, News24 sister publication Rapport reported on Sunday. Furthermore, Maimane refused to return it for months, even after colleagues warned him about possible reputational damage to both him and the party. According to the publication, Jooste made the white Toyota Fortuner available for Maimane’s use ahead of the municipal elections in 2016. James Selfe, the DA Federal Executive chairperson, confirmed to Rapport that the vehicle was owned by a car rental company and paid for by Steinhoff. He said that after the Steinhoff revelations, the party thought it best, under the circumstances, to return the vehicle, which they later did. But it appeared that Maimane had for months continued to drive the vehicle, despite letters from colleagues warning him of the risks. Jooste is accused of insider trading, cooking financial books and dodging taxes, all of which caused the company's share price to cr

Angelo Agrizzi – I did not murder Gavin Watson

Image
Former Bosasa supremo Angelo Agrizzi has hit back at media reports quoting family members of Gavin Watson which essentially accused him of being involved in the “murder” of Watson. Watson was pronounced dead on the scene of a car crash near OR Tambo Airport last month. The Bosasa-owned Toyota Corolla sedan he was driving collided with a concrete bridge pillar on an access road to the airport terminal. It remains unclear why Watson was at the airport that morning. Preliminary autopsy reports have indicated that Watson’s heart had stopped beating and that he was possibly dead before the collision, evidenced by the lack of significant bleeding from a serious neck wound which resulted in a severed carotid artery. There has been no official evidence made public to indicate Watson may have been murdered or that his death is being treated as suspicious. Police investigators have been tight-lipped over the probe. Now Agrizzi has taken a swipe at the Sowetan newspaper, which on Wednesday publ

Lubabalo Makeleni said the Dunoon Taxi Association was fed up after their taxis were impounded. “The taxis have been impounded over the past month and they were tolerant, but there were no results in their favour.” On Friday,
