EFF condemns ruthless murder of George Floyd by US police officer

Image
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have condemned what they call the ruthless murder of George Floyd by racist police officers in the United States (US). The party said Floyd’s killing represented a deep tradition of racial prejudice and violence against African Americans by law enforcement in America. In a graphic video, 46-year-old Floyd is seen pleading for air as a white officer restricts him with a knee placed firmly on his neck for several minutes, he later died in hospital. The EFF’s Vuyani Pambo said they welcomed the arrest of the policeman Derek Chauvin, who is facing charges of murder and manslaughter. The party has also called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to immediately convene a meeting with representatives of the US in South Africa and demanded they recalled the deployment of the military in Minneapolis against protesters.

SA lockdown: Concerns in Gauteng about the unbanning of alcohol

Image
The Gauteng government insists all its metros will move to Level 3 of the lockdown next week. That’s despite the three big metros being flagged as COVID-19 hotspots. The province has over 3,000 cases  the second-highest in the country  after the Western Cape. But it’s the unbanning of alcohol sales that’s causing concern. President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday announced that the limited sale of alcohol would be allowed under Level 3 conditions. The sale of alcohol will be restricted to home consumption as well as other control measures that will be announced in the course of the week, according to Ramaphosa. “We are now worried because people will be allowed to have a bit of alcohol, it means another burden to our facilities,” said Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku. We are hoping that going forward the restriction and the sale of alcohol will still be highly regulated. Masuku said all metros in the province will move to Level 3 at the same time. We’re not going to have a differ...

Minnaar said nine nurses who were on their way home from work occupied the vehicle. Ahead of our move to lockdown level three traffic on the country’s roads is predictably increasing and with it expected fatalities. “With more and more traffic on the road, it is about drivers now being more cautious,” Minnaar said. “We don’t want accidents such as this to happen, we don’t want people losing their lives unnecessarily. Image
Gospel Singer and TV host Khaya Mthethwa might be a pastor too but, he does not believe that opening places of worship is a great idea. The singer took to Twitter to vent on this heated debate, which has since been on everyone’s lips on whether churches must be allowed to operate, since the President addressed the nation last night. President Cyril Ramaphosa said places of worship may re-open under strict restrictions in alert level 3 of lock-down, which will start next week Monday. The President declared places of worship as an essential service because prayer will comfort and strengthen the country as it continues to confront this pandemic. This left many people divided on Twitter with some saying those who want to pray must pray at home, and opening churches will cause more fatalities and Covid-19 cases. Some said churches are an essential service and but protecting ourselves and others will be all in our hands. Khaya weighed in on the matter and said to the President, opening chu...

Mzansi reacts to Bonang Matheba’s Motivational Speech

Image
It seems as though at this point, Mzansi will no longer be taking any advice from celebrities because they say celebs set goals for people at an unrealistic age. Bonang Matheba is the latest to be slammed for her advice to young people by attaching age to various achievements. Last week saw Nandi Mbatha landing on the wrong side of Twitter with her advice that most 30 years old’s took offence to. Both the ladies have been accused of speaking from a point of privilege as the reality of most South Africans is that they are poverty-stricken or don’t have the relevant resources readily available. An old video of Bonang speaking at a seminar two years ago, posted by Innocent Matijane, saw an uproar from people who do not agree with B’s point of view. If you are 18 right now or 19 and you don’t know what you’re going to be or what you want to achieve by the time you are 24, it’s already too late. I am not lying to you. The future is created by you and planning minimizes the effects of...

Somizi is worried about the sale of alcohol

Image
Following the news that alcohol will be sold for home consumption during level 3 of the country’s lockdown, media personality Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung has expressed his concerns. “I thought that when they finally lift the ban I was going to be excited and today I woke up feeling really worried. Like I am really worried and I am sure I’m not the only person who is feeling this way. It’s really scary”, he said in the video on Instagram. He went on to say that the government needed to specify how people would get access to alcohol. “If we are going to buy alcohol like we buy food and stuff (in stores), that is worrying for me. One of the reasons why I am worried is because I am worried about people who will now prioritise alcohol versus everything else, their food, bread on the table and their health. I am worried about crowds going to buy alcohol with the fear that the ban might be brought back again”, he added. The “Idols SA” judge and radio personality said that he felt the peo...

Those living in hotspot areas might remain at level 4 in June

Image
While there is no need to keep certain areas at level 4, other areas might need to stay at that classification for a while longer in order to curb infection rates. As the country anticipates all the things they will be able to do again once level 3 of the national lockdown kicks in, those living in areas considered to be hotspots may have to wait a little while longer. This according to a presentation delivered by Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize during a Covid -19 plenary briefing of the members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) alongside Minister of Co-operative Governance Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on Tuesday. Mkhize prefaced his presentation by stating that things are worse now than they were when the country confirmed its first case of coronavirus on 5 March. “Even though we might now be used to the fact there is Covid-19, it is a little bit more problematic now than it was before.” The minister then admitted that a “hard lockdown is no longer sustainable. We need to rea...
